Trouble In Mind  by Alice Childress

A biting backstage drama set during the rehearsals of a supposedly progressive Broadway play about racism in the American South. The central conflict arises as Wiletta Mayer, a seasoned Black actress, and her fellow Black cast members grapple with the white director's patronizing approach and the play's inauthentic, stereotypical portrayal of Black characters. Wiletta's increasing frustration leads her to challenge the director directly, exposing the systemic racism, microaggressions, and power imbalances that still resonate powerfully in the entertainment industry today.

Fairview by Jackie Sibblies Drury

A seemingly typical family drama, observing a middle-class Black family preparing for a birthday dinner. The play expertly builds a familiar, sitcom-like scenario, focusing on the everyday anxieties and relationships within the family. However, it gradually and ingeniously shifts its focus, subtly drawing the audience's attention to the act of observation itself and the deeply ingrained biases that can shape how we perceive others, particularly across racial lines.
